Catalyst 43
Product Description
Catalyst 43 is a specialized epoxy hardener designed for use with Stycast potting and encapsulating compounds, specifically valued for its ability to deliver high-temperature performance. As an amber-coloured liquid composed of imidazole and aliphatic amines, it serves as a non-staining alternative to other common catalysts like Catalyst 11. When integrated into an epoxy system, it cures into a rigid, infusible solid that provides excellent chemical resistance and can withstand operating environments up to 205°C when a proper post-cure schedule is followed.
In its liquid state, the hardener is a low-viscosity material, measuring between 0.040 and 0.065 Pa-s, which facilitates easy mixing and flow during the encapsulation process. It features a density of 0.9 to 1.1 g/cm3 and a workable pot life of 40 minutes, providing a sufficient window for degassing and pouring. To achieve the best results, the material can be cured at room temperature for 16 to 24 hours, or the process can be optimized through a heat-cure cycle of 16 to 24 hours at 65°C followed by 2 to 4 hours at 150°C.
Effective application requires thorough surface preparation and careful mixing to ensure the chemical reaction is uniform across the entire mass. If air entrapment occurs, the mixture can be evacuated under vacuum at a pressure of 1-5 mm of mercury until bubbling subsides. To maintain its reactive integrity, Catalyst 43 should be stored in sealed containers protected from humidity at room temperature, which allows for a shelf life of up to one year. This makes it a reliable choice for long-term projects requiring high-performance structural and thermal stability in electronic potting.
