Joining the masses – 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon

26th March 2019

A year on and our Supply Chain Team Leader will be running the London Marathon for the second time. We asked Sarah what made her want to run it again, she said, “I decided to run it for a second year because the experience is truly amazing. The whole day is special; there is no other word to describe it. The atmosphere and positive energy is something that gets under your skin.” The supportive crowd is a fantastic motivator for all of the runners taking part on Sunday 28th April. London has attracted a record total of over 400,000 applicants this year!

The need for a challenge attracted Sarah to the London Marathon. As a child, she had watched it on TV and thought it was out of reach until she started running 5k’s and 10k’s and began to enjoy running. Training four days a week with a long run each weekend and being part of the Scunthorpe and District Running Club has really helped as she is training with like-minded people working towards the same goal. What started off as a hobby soon became a passion! Sarah’s advice to people who want to get into running is, “believe in yourself and your abilities, things aren’t out of reach if you train hard enough.”

This personal challenge was enough to inspire Sarah to take the challenge on for a second consecutive year. Her running had plateaued since she started in 2014 and she felt that she needed something big to focus on and to work towards so why not a marathon or two! Since her training started, Sarah has read about Ben Smith and The 401 Challenge; he ran 401 marathons in 401 days. His next challenge is to run a marathon in every US state capital! “From reading about Ben Smith, I have learnt that the human body can do anything if you tell it that it can,” said Sarah.

Fundraising for Children with Cancer UK, as part of her efforts, HITEK are holding a Fundraising Day, this includes a staff dress down day and a raffle for everyone. Raffle prizes have been donated by many local companies in Scunthorpe.
